National Park Service Request for Consultation on Traditional Cultural Properties and Native American Landscapes

The National Park Service (NPS) has invited tribal officials to participate in two conference phone calls "to obtain initial planning-stage recommendations" on an initiative regarding traditional cultural properties and Native American landscapes. As stated in the announcement (copy attached), NPS is seeking input on:

1) Updating information contained in the National Register Bulletin [38], Guidelines for Evaluating and Documenting Traditional Cultural Properties

2) Developing guidance on identifying and evaluating National Register-eligible traditional Native American landscapes

3) Establishing a format and time frame for the balance of a consultation process that would allow NPS to best consider your thoughts about how traditional cultural properties and Native American landscapes can be addressed under the authorities of the National Historic Preservation Act

The conference calls are scheduled for April 23 and May 23. The deadline to register for the April 23 call is April 2. The announcement explains how to register and explains that notice will be posted on the National Register Program’s website: www.nps.gov/nr. It should be noted that the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has also engaged in an initiative on Native American cultural landscapes. The Advisory Council’s action plan is available on the Council’s website, along with other documents relating to cultural landscapes.

Please let us know if we may provide additional information regarding the National Park Service request for consultation on traditional cultural properties and Native American landscapes.
