Accelerating Economic Development for Tribes
In Oklahoma, like in so many states, tribes that experienced decades of poverty have begun to prosper with Indian gaming and the ensuing diversification of their economies. Oklahoma tribes, in particular, have benefited from the Oklahoma Model Tribal-State Gaming Compact. This landmark legislation created a climate of legal certainty, allowing tribes to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to finance new gaming facilities and related infrastructure, and create thousands of new jobs and millions of dollars for tribal and community improvement. As the lead tribal negotiator and lobbyist, Hobbs Straus was involved throughout the process, bringing together tribes, the State of Oklahoma, and others to develop this historic agreement.
From the earliest days of Indian gaming, we have been active — helping draft the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and assisting with the first issuance of a bond to finance an Indian casino (the Mohegan Sun). Our expertise and achievements in tribal finance and economic development expand well beyond gaming. From analyzing prospective business ventures outside Indian Country to bringing outside investors in, we help tribes establish and maintain tribal businesses ranging from travel plazas, hotels, and restaurants to create section 8(a) entities and federally, tribally and state chartered corporations and enterprises.
