Klint A. Cowan

Prior to joining the Firm in 2005, Mr. Cowan received his master of law degree from Oxford University, where he studied a broad range of public law topics, including public international law, human rights, and constitutional theory. His dissertation on the US implementation of its human rights norms against American Indian tribes received a distinction from the law faculty.

While in law school at the University of Tulsa, he served as a clerk for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Indian Law Project at the Boesche Legal Clinic, representing Creek tribal members before tribal and state courts, and federal administrative hearings. He also served as a volunteer clerk for the Cherokee Nation Judicial Appeals Tribunal and worked on the University's Tribal Environmental Management project documenting and mapping toxic sites on and near Indian lands. His law school studies focused primarily on federal Indian law and environmental law.

Before entering law school, Mr. Cowan practiced as an environmental geologist for an independent government agency. He holds a B.Sc. in environmental science and geology from Antioch College. While at Antioch, Mr. Cowan was a Bonner Foundation community service scholar, and a recipient of several awards, including the 1997 Nelson Urban prize for outstanding Antioch student. He interned with several environmental consulting firms and the US Geological Survey, and the Smithsonian Institution selected him for its Research Training Program for undergraduate scientists. After graduation, he co-directed the College's Environmental Field Program and developed courses in ecology and natural resources.

Mr. Cowan has published in scientific and legal journals such as the Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal (forthcoming 2006), the Energy Law Journal (2003), and Abstracts of the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Conference (1998). He has also served as an editor for three journals: the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal, the Energy Law Journal, and the ABA Environment, Energy, and Resources Year in Review.
